The capacity of a garden
for nurturing the human spirit has been
recognized throughout the centuries. The
commission to design a cemetery garden requires
the understanding that the ultimate client
is unknown to the designer – family
and friends of the person being interred.
This garden in Houston occupies a challenging
location adjacent to the main entrance at
Interstate 10. Walls and planting provide
enclosure and privacy; traditional configuration
and materials were used to provide a comforting,
familiar surrounding. We designed an ornamental
metal rose arbor, arching over a fountain
as the focal point in the center of the
garden. The four quadrants of lawn surrounding
the arbor will be gradually occupied by
plots that retain the open character of
the lawn. Surrounding the lawn, low hedges
and brick curbs are used to delineate family
plots.
