As part of the extensive
Project Brays of the Harris County Flood
Control District, this project entailed
preliminary design for realignment of one
mile of Brays Bayou channel and a 250 acre
regional stormwater detention basin. While
principal for Knudson & Associates,
Jim Patterson led the design effort in collaboration
with LJA Engineering (civil) and Mussetter
Engineering (hydrogeomorphology and H&H
modeling). The landscape architect’s
role was to provide conceptual design for
the basin configuration and landform. Downstream
of the basin, the channel was deepened and
realigned to create a more natural meandering
stream – limited somewhat by the existing
channel right-of-way width. We worked with
the engineers to include planting while
still accommodating high stream flows.
In order to plan recreation facilities for
the basin and Brays Bayou channel, an analysis
of existing public recreation and open space
facilities in surrounding neighborhoods
was prepared. We coordinated with Harris
County Precinct Three Parks Department to
prepare conceptual design for future park
facilities, incorporated into the basin
landform. Trails along the Brays Bayou channel
will be included and will serve as maintenance
access and delineation between maintained
upper slopes and natural lower slope portions
of the channel.
