White Oak Bayou converges
with Buffalo Bayou at historic Allen’s
Landing in downtown Houston. Although the
area was ignored and avoided for decades,
public interest began rejuvenating in the
mid 1980’s. Harris County Flood Control
District commissioned a design for the first
800 feet of the bayou to accommodate channel
improvements while providing pedestrian
oriented public spaces along the waterway.
Public workshops were utilized to set redevelopment
goals for the surrounding area: public access
to the bayou, unified water’s edge
treatment and connections for hike and bike
trails along the bayou. The design process
involved extensive coordination with the
civil engineer to reconcile flood flow capacity
requirements with pedestrian and recreation
opportunities and public safety considerations.
Jim Patterson was responsible for this work
in 1990, at Tapley Lunow Architects.
